About this album

Antonio Vivaldi Antonio Vivaldi was born in Venice in 1678, the first of nine children born to the barber Giovanni Battista Vivaldi, an excellent violinist who became a member of the orchestra of San Marco in 1685. Antonio spent the greater part of his life in Venice, a city of splendid liturgical music (the San Marco had included Adriaen Willaert, Andrea and Giovanni Gabrieli, and Claudio Monteverdi among its directors of music), numerous performances of opera in some 10 theatres, and a lively concert culture, one of whose most important foundations was furnished by the performances given by members of the conservatories of Venice’s four Ospedales (orphanages). Vivaldi’s activities in the Ospedale della Piet began in 1703….
