About this album

During his life and shortly after his death, Boccherini was pretty much a plaything of criticism, more so than his colleagues. While his string quintets were admired, his rococo style of composition, which was completely suited to the airy drawing room world of the time, was criticised. And even today with the growing enthusiasm for Boccherini, there is still a group of music lovers who relegate him to the shadows of Mozart and Haydn. The familiar old reason is still, “His music is certainly pleasant enough, but it lacks depth.” A truly knowledgeable Boccherini devotee takes no heed of this view; he will have long discerned on his own the rich, sonorous world of playful, unexpected twists underneath the surface rococo veneer of Boccherini’s chamber music….
