The Ebony Band was founded in 1990 by Werner Herbers. Its core is made up of musicians from the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. The ensemble specializes in modern, adventurous music primarily from the first half of the 20th century. Special attention is focused on the (frequently unjustly) forgotten music of lesser known composers, deemed to be worthy of revival. The goal of the group now is the registration of detailed information about the music of the interbellum on record and the internet (www.ebonyband.nl).

Werner Herbers hält seine tüchtige Klang-Mannschaft locker auf Kurs. Ein Hörvergnügen, das nur getrübt wird von der Trauer über das spätere Schicksal des jazzliebenden Komponisten, der 1941 im bayerischen Internierungslager Wülzburg umkam.

In de derde klas van de HBS werd door mijn leraar Duits deze muziek, met name ’Der Dreigroscheneroper’ al behandeld.........40 jaar later heeft mijn dochter het ook voorgeschoteld gekregen tijdens een lesprogramma. Da’s toch niet vooor niks? Kópen deze cd, luister zelf en geeft het door aan anderen.

(...) De compilatie opent met de Kleine Dreigroschenmusik van Weill, bestaande uit een aantal van de bekendste melodieën uit het beroemde theaterwerk in een zuiver instrumentale versie. 
Een klein juweeltje is vervolgens de twaalf minuten durende mini-opera Egon und Emilie (ondertitel 'kein Familiendrama') van Ernst Toch (1887-1964). Centraal in deze nonsensicale werkje op een tekst van de dichter Christian Morgenstern (1871-1914) staat een hysterische operadiva die zich door haar partner niet begrepen voelt. Het eindigt ermee dat hij hoed, stok en sigaret pakt en haar in de steek laat.
H.M.S. Royal Oak van Erwin Schulhoff (1894-1942) wordt omschreven als een 'jazz-oratorium' op een tekst van Otto Rombach. Het is een cyclus van vijftien afzonderlijke 'nummers' met de beschrijving van een historische gebeurtenis: een conflict over het wel of niet spelen van jazz-muziek aan boord van een Engelse pantserkruiser dat uiteindelijk zelfs leidde tot een krijgsraad.

(...) The work by Ernst Toch is a short satire on opera, using a libretto by the poet and humorist Christian Morgenstern. Subtitled “No Family Drama,” it is a monologue by a put-upon contralto having a nervous breakdown. Erwin Schulhoff is now one of the best-known of the many Jewish composers who lost his life in the Holocaust. His jazz oratorio of 1930 is about a mutiny aboard a British battleship after the crew are informed by their admiral that jazz music will be forbidden from that day forward. It was based on an actual incident in the Royal Navy and partakes of much of the parodic slant of Weill in such works as Mahagonny. (...) The Ebony Band is typical of the exciting and path-breaking music scene in Amsterdam.

(…) Without question, this is the best Threepenny Opera Suite (…) Herbers really contrast the deliberately plodding rhythmic substratum against spiky details of muted trumpets, just-right touches of rubato, and the sexy gait of the melody lines. (...) Erwin Schulhoff’s H.M.S. Royal Oak is a Jazz Oratorio, dubbed by the writer and collaborator Otto Rombach as “an attempt at finding a form for a radio play which is not limited to the radio.” As such it works superbly on CD with everything present, and no heavy treading on the stage to indicate any missed dramatic action. The texts are all delivered in the original German, but translated in the booklet. The piece is full of marvellous moments and colourful jazzy orchestration. (...)
(...) All of the performances are live, but there is no audience noise or applause, the unequal nature of the different environments an easily acceptable trade-off for having such a well-balanced programme in a single outstanding artefact.

(…) Überrachsend ist erst recht die hochexpressive Interpretation des immer noch unveröffentlichten Jazzoratoriums von Schulhoff. Es handelt von einer Revolte auf dem gleichnamigen englischen Panzerkreuzer, nachdem der Admiral verboten hatte, Jazzmusik an Bord zu spielen. Mit Foxtrotts, bluesartigen Stücken, Jazz-Einlagen und Tangos verherrlicht Schulhoff jene damals neuartige Musik.
Die Südostschweiz
