For those of us using Windows who want the absolute best downloads, but want to hold off on buying new decoder boxes, I have had excellent results playing DSD files with Foobar utilizing a plug in available on their site. Both the player and the plug in are free.

First get the Foobar player:

http://www.foobar2000.org/

Then download the plug in

Once the file is unzipped, use your file manager to drop it into the "components" file under Foobar in your programs.

I then had to use "open with" to play the dsd file on Foobar the first time.

I haven't had any problems with it, and even with so-so computer speakers, it's quite easy to hear the difference with DSD on the free samples Jared supplies.

Disclaimer--- I don't pretend to be a windows wizzard, so you may have some different paths to take. And be sure to download the free sample to make sure it all works for you.

Also.... You can even burn a standard RBCD from your DSD files---downconverting, of course, by similarly downloading and installing the CD burner plug in ...

One final thing--- I'm informed that the Foobar actually converts to PCM for listening. Well--- This is still a good thing. You can download the best possible quality for the future, and still be able to listen AND burn CD's if you wish--- till you DO buy that converter box.
