I would like to hear a lot more from Rachel Podger and Trevor Pinnock. There is a distinct paucity of harpsichord music on SACD. Perhaps a multi-channel compilatioin of harpsichord favourites from Trevor - Le Tic-toc-choc, Barricades Mysterieuses, Rondo Alla Turca, Harmonious Blacksmith, etc. etc. recorded such that the harpsichord is in the centre of the listening area.

I didn't like violin music all that much until I heard Rachel in action. A lot more Mozart, Vivaldi would go down well, perhaps recorded such that the listener is in the centre of the ensemble.

It would be fun were you to be able to produce a decent multi-channel recording of that Mozart work for 3 harpsichords + orchestra. I used to have it on an early CD from Denon.

I find Lazic's musical sence and technic very high. I know that his recordings do not sell good in Japan. It was sometimes diffcult to find his CDs in japanese CD-
shop. But I believe that his time will come.

Have Mr. Lazic got a geometrical body called "five-tetra" made in Japan from his musical partner?

Hi Shogo Mori

What is this about Lazic and the Five Tetrahedra? Are you talking about the symmetrical compound with the same vertices as the regular dodecahedron?

Ravel' Introduction & Allegro for flute, harp, string quartet and clarinet is a wonderful piece and would greatly benefit from a modern 5 channel recording of which there are none that I can find. There is a wonderful mono disc from the 1950's by the Hollywood String quartet and an excellent 1970's performance in stereo by the Melos Ensemble. I would definitely buy a surround sound version. Best wishes AL London

I know you said that you won't do reissues, but... I own the St.Mathew Passion on CD, and I would welcome it on SACD with the fine booklets you have created for St.John and Chrostmas Oratorio.

As for new stuff, I am a fan of Pieter Wispelwey and the Ebony Band. Can you bring them together for a project?

Hello,

i enjoy the channel SACDs very much. In multichannel mode the sound is just great. i wish to know wheni can buy the new mahler 6th SACD by one of my favourite conductors Ivan Fischer.
I wish that IVAN FISCHER and his Budapest Festival Orchestra will record many SACD for channel classics. My wishlist of recordings played by the Budapest festival orchestra: Smetana, Ma vlast. Mahler 4th symphony, Mahler 7th symphony.

I also wish a good opera production by channel classics. So far there is none?! For example i wait for a good FAUST by GOUNOD on SACD or some Puccini Operas on SACD.

I would gladly buy recordings of Janacek and Martinu by Fisher/Budapest Festival Orchestra. The Glagolitic Mass, Sinfonietta and Taras Bulba would all make sonically stunning SACDs. From Martinu I would suggest The Greek Passion, 5th Symphony and Les Fresques De Piero.

Just borrow from library the SACD LeBrun oboe concertos vol.2 which its recording is pretty good. I have ordered two CDs in your online shop. But I have a question. Compared with ARCHIV BLUE(471 724-2) "lebrun.mozart oboe concertos", your LeBrun Concerto no.5 is as the same as ARCHIV's LeBrun oboe concerto no.2. I'd like to know who is correct.
I'd like to hear more good recording about concertos from the composers not as famous as Mozart,Hydn or Beethoven.

Ivan Fischer and the Budapest Festival Orchestra are my favorite Channel artists although its hard to leave out Pieter Wispelway. I'd like Dvorak's 7th symphony, Smetana Ma Vlast, Tchaikovsky Sym #2, Manfred Sym. Brahms Hungarian Dances, Liszt Hungarian Rhapsodys, Enescu Rhapsodies, Elgar Cello concerto, Prokofiev Sym #5,6&7 Bruckner Sym#6 Ravel Daphnis and Chloe. Tchaikovsky complete ballets. Prokofiev Kije, Ivan the Terrible, Alexander Nevesky. Martinu Cello Concertos. Given the paucity of SACD recordings, we really don't need another Mahler series. SFO Live and others have alrady filled that niche nicely for a while. I don't want to duplicate so soon for the sake of supporting one of my favorite labels.

I can agree with you about not wanting another series. We are going to be releasing Mahler 2nd in April and then enough. For repertoire choice we have been looking at tours of the orchestra so that we do not need extra rehearsals before recordings.
The orchestra would be on tour and then immediately make the sessions afterwards. Our next recording is from Richard Strauss 'Joseph Legend".
Indeed looking for more unkown works that have not been compared to 50 other recordings!

The BFO with Ivan Fischer is hands down my favorite Channel group. I'm so impressed with their chamber-like intimacy and dynamic expression. My introduction to the group was the Rachmaninov 2nd and they are quickly becoming one of my all-time favorite groups. I will probably buy every disc they put out...

I already have at least 7 recordings of Mahler 2...and yet I'd love another by this orchestra...I'm looking forward to that release.

I would love a recording of the Tchaikovsky symphony 1 as I don't think there are many serious SACDs of this wonderful piece.

How about some Elgar symphonies...and Dvorak symphonies 5-7...Dvorak's overture: In Nature's Realm...such a wonderful piece and no one records it.

I'd also be quite interested in their renditions of Shostakovitch and Prokofiev...and Mendelssohn...and Brahms...:-)

I realize there may already be numerous recordings of some of these things...but this conductor and orchestra (and Channel Classics) have made such a powerful impression on me...I'm hooked. More discs please!

If you are following the orchestra's tour repertoire that sort of makes it "Fischer's Choice" and that may not be so bad.

I still would like to put in a word for the Martinu cello concertos and Prokofiev's last three symphonies. Also Prokofiev's Symphonia Concertante for cello and orchestra.

Its times like these I wish I were a monied person so I could offer financial support.

Would dearly love to hear Netherlands Bach society do the Telemann Passion and Caldara and Zelenka (anything) and maybe the Handel Brockes Passion etc. And some of the Haydn masses.

Would also like to hear Fischer and his Budapest Orch doing the Dvorak 7, 6 and 5 (in that order).

DO NOT need any more Mahler or Shostakovich or Beethoven or Rach. or Sibelius or Brahms symphonies. BUT would LOVE the Nielsens (any and all) and Martinus.

I second the request for more Dvorak symphonies from Fischer, as well as other Dvorak symphonic music (tone poems, Symphonic Variations, etc.). While we're at it, how about Dvorak string quartets?

Haydn - symphonies, masses.

Beethoven - Mass in C (actually, SACD could use a good recording of the Missa Solemnis as well).

Mahler - we still need a complete 10th, an alternative Das Lied, and a Das Klagende Lied, not to mention Des Knaben Wunderhorn.

OK, for fun - how about a complete Tannhauser, Paris version?

I am a fan of van der Velden, Polger, Wispelwey, and have 8 of their SACDs. I do NOT enjoy the Amsterdam Sinfonietta SACD of Tchaikovsky and Verdi chamber works "done large".

I have Channel CDs featuring Duke Qtt, Hawthorne Qtt, Boccherini Qtt & LaRoche Qtt -- so I know that you formerly employed quartets. My point: The SACD universe hungers for chamber works from Smetana, Janacek, Martinu, Enescu, Kodaly, Bartok, Hindemith, Milhaud, Britten, Schnittke, Maconchy, Glass etc.

It would seem that Dvorak 7th symphony is the favorite to record. I have passed this on to Ivan Fischer. Actually in trying to get away from overly recorded works, we are going to be recording
Richard Strauss - Joseph's Legend in March for release in the fall.

Anonymous Bruce Zeisel said...

The Dvorak 7th seems a "natural" given the critical success of Fischer's Philips Dvorak discs.

One danger of recording music no one has heard before is that unless critics regard it as worthy, you still face the critical bugbear.

I will buy the Strauss regardless because it is a Channel Classics recording and I have learned to trust your judgement.

I have seen some threads in SACD.net that people are worried we will do a complete Mahler cycle. This is certainly not going to happen.
We look at the concert schedule of the orchestra because we want to have the recording sessions after 'x' number of concerts because only then is the orchestra hot and ready. It is of course cost effective! So for the first year and a half we could only record what had already been scheduled. We are now working more closely on repertoire so that the future recordings are more in tune between the orchestra, conductor and record label.
Again, I have spoken with Ivan Fischer about more Dvorak. During his Philips time, Philips would only record east European composers so Ivan was happy with Channel to finally have the opportunity to record other composers.

There are quite a few major classics missing in the SACD repetorie that need the most excellent recording/performance that you have been giving us, including:

Dvorak 7th
Brahms 1-4 symphonies
Schumann 1-4 symphonies
Brahms piano concertos
Beethoven symphonies (although Bis is off to a good start here, but there are really no other series that are very good)
Sibelius symphonies need some holes plugged (although the LSO series is working hard on that...)
Glazunov symphonies
Elgar's works

Thoase are a few of the things I am looking for, however I would really like to add to this some of my favorite pieces:

Rachmaninov Symphony 1
Rachmaninov symphonic pieces (the bells, spring cantata, etc...)
Borodin symphony 2
and Shostakovich symphony 6

Thanks!

Please keep on using period instruments for Barok music. The softer sound is so much better than the overly loud modern instruments. I do not favour specific artists but decide on a disc by disc basis, mainly based on being on period instruments.

We went to hear Rachel Podger directing/leading the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment in Oxford last night. It was a concert of baroque Italian music, starting with a three part sonata by Cima (1610) and ending with Geminiani's 'La Follia' (1726), with other pieces from Legrenzi, Vivaldi, Stradella and Corelli. There was some spectacular playing from Rachel, Alison Bury (violin) and Katherine Sharman (cello) but above all the music was lovely and the sound ravishing. This would make a wonderful CD.

First of all, Congratulations to Channel Classics! I would like to mention that it is my favourite label for baroque classical music.First... your roster of artists. There are artists everywhere who are famous and have many awards. But that does little for me. The Channel Classics roster of artists PLAY wonderfully. And thats what counts. I value the quality and integrity you place on your choice of artists. Your artwork and packaging is lovely. I appreciate the detailed information provided on the recording equipment used. The sound quality is excellent. Liner notes are great. I do have a complaint that the liner notes sometimes fall out of the "laminated paper folder" style of packaging. Perhaps you could raise the 'slit' higher so that the pocket becomes "deeper" so that the liner notes will not so easily fall out of the packaging!

As for other projects, It would be lovely if you could get Ashley Solomon to record the 12 fantasias of Telemann. His playing and his traverso is lovely and for many aspiring amateurs of traverso's, we would love to hear his interpretation of them having had a taste of it via the awesome Paris Quartets Vol 1!

I also do hope we hear more obscure works featuring the viola da gamba and clavichord. Your sound quality just makes baroque instruments gorgeous to listen too.

Well done Channel Classics!!!

I would like to hear Trevor Pinnock record more Bach on harpsichord. His recording of the Partitas a few years ago is stunning and one of my favorite recordings.

I'd like to hear Ivan Ficher and his orchestra record a Bruckner cycle. Brahms and Beethoven cycles would be welcome as well.

Blogger Channel Classics said...

Ivan Fischer is not interested in doing cycles because then he would have to record pieces that he is really not interested in recording. Plus it confines you from doing interesting other pieces. We try to combine a tour with the recording sessions right after so that the orchestra does not have to rehearse separately and they are completely focused on the music. This means planning a couple of years earlier when the programming takes place. Not an easy matter.

We have been looking into doing a Brahms and a Beethoven symphony. also having the strings alone on a disc.

I do not see Rachel Podger and Trevor Pinnock getting back together. Rachel is now playing with Gary Cooper and their style and playing is wonderful.
I will even be doing some solo recordings with Gary in the future because I believe in his musicality!

How about some Vaughan Williams? The 6th symphony would be a good place to start. And the Monteverdi Vespers. I bought the new Hyperion SACD by King and found it a sore disappointment. If ever a piece cried out for an indiscrete multichannel recording, this is one, but Hyperion fluffed the opportunity - now it could be yours!

I think that the Brandeburg Concertos of Bach would be a nice one. And the Firebird Suíte of Igor Stravinsky.
That's it!

Favourite artists - Bart Schneemann, Peter Wispelway and the The Gents!

Record something together, whatever it is! (I know of the Telemann trio sonatas, but Bart is showing off too much, haha)

More obscure oboe repertoire which i am sure oboe enthusiasts and fans of Bart will purchase at any given time.

Australian distributor "Art Distribution" sucks. It takes them upto 2 months to get CDs in. Is there an alternative way (ecept obviously through AMAZON) to get your wonderful SACDs in Sydney?

Cheers,
RK

If our distributor does not have it in stock, then he orders it with his next order. Since he only orders no more than once a month, then you got unlucky.
I understand he is doing a good business with his direct sales, with your comment being the first to me that it was taking too long.

greetings

I would like to know when will it be released the CD of Wispelwey, Shostakovich number 2 cello concerto and Walton cello concerto. Thank you.

We are just finishing the editing now of the Shostakovich and hope to have it released by the end of April.
The Walton is a live recording done in Australia and will probably have this out in the fall.

Most of all I would like a new recording of Nikolaj Myaskovsky's magnificent 6th symphony. There are some great performances by Kondrashin and Svetlanov in mediocre sound and a good recording by Järvi, but this symphony deserves the fantastic BFO and inspired Ivan Fischer as well as topnotch Channel Classics sound.

Absolute favorites: Pieter Wispelwey, Dejan Lazic.
Others: Netherlands Bach Society, BFO/Fischer.

Would love to hear Lazic with Beethoven piano sonatas...
