The 7th Symphony is among the greatest masterpieces. Symphonies, which start in a minor and end in a major key, like Beethoven’s fifth, Mahler’s first and many others take us from sadness to happiness, from tragedy to jubilation. But here Dvořák sustains the D minor to the very end: he turns to D major only in the final six bars! It is an extraordinary structure, an incredible development creating irresistible excitement.
There are many hidden treasures among Dvořák’s works and it is a particular pleasure for me to present the beautiful Suite for Orchestra in A major on this disc. I think it should be performed more often in concerts, and I sincerely hope that this recording will inspire orchestras to extend their Dvořák repertoire with this composition of enchanting beauty, lyricism and freshness.

(...) Ivan Fischer, qui pour être hongrois n'en comprend pas moins la musique de ses voisins tchèques, ne se trompe pas et rend justice à cette œuvre difficile. Il y a dix ans, il avait enregistré déjà et très bien les Huitième et Neuvième symphonies, rééditées aujourd’hui chez Channel Classics.  (...) Sa Septième est encore plus aboutie, ne serait-ce que parce que son Orchestre du Festival de Budapest a gagné en rondeur, en puissance, en virtuosité. Mais aussi parce qu’il sait traduire la fébrilité de la partition, son exaltation, sa richesse rythmique (le scherzo est une pure merveille) avec conviction. Pour les amateurs d’un Dvorak plus enjoué, l’aimable Suite Américaine sonne comme une récréation après cette sombre symphonie.

(…) Fischer weet het zo vanzelfsprekend te laten klinken dat het opeens volstrekt logisch is dat de Amerikanen een heuse hymne maakten van het hoofdthema van het Largo. Het is de kracht van de dirigent die louter geloof in muziek, in de klinkende noten. En het is de kracht van een orkest dat bereid is om de dirigent op zijn reis te volgen. Het is uiteindelijke de samenwerking die garant staat voor zulke adembenemende resultaten.

(…) Ivan Fischer en zijn orkest onderscheiden zich in deze muziek, alleen al door de smaakvol ouderwetse portamenti in de strijkers. Fischer’s Dvork is niet het einde van alle tegenspraak, maar wie wil meepraten moet deze cd in huis hebben.
