- Charpentier - Saints & Sinners
Details
In 1992, the inspired musicologist Frits Noske published the last of his works to appear during his lifetime: Saints and Sinners. Noske called it a minor mir- acle that he, as a researcher, had discovered a genre which had never been studied in its entirety: Latin musical dialogues of the 17th century. The earliest examples of such dialogues appeared around 1600, and the genre had disappe- ared from the musical landscape by the time the century had elapsed. Yet more than 500 of these pieces have survived, the majority of them from Italy, but also a fair number from France, the Netherlands, Poland, and England. Many of the surviving works had not been heard since the 17th century, and had to be lite- rally excavated from musical oblivion.
For this recording we were able to make use of the extensive collection of transcriptions made by Noske during his inves- tigations throughout Europe. A musical dialogue is best described as a sung conversation involving one or more persons. As in the opera, roles are assigned. Sometimes a narrator, either a single voice or several, is present. The texts were generally not liturgical, but could be used in the liturgy, e.g. as gradual or offertory substitutes in the Mass or as substitutes for one or more antiphons at Vespers. Usually the dialogues were performed by small ensembles, ranging from two to five singers and an equal number of instrumentalists. Favorite subjects include passages from the Bible, stories or songs of praise dedicated to saints, and moralizing conversa- tions, e.g. between Jesus or a saint and an anonymous sinner. The dialogues undoubtedly had a function as part of religious education in the 17th century:
