Details

Beethoven's works without opus number Most composers who "directed" the opus numbers of their works also left a number of compositions without opus number. In Beethoven's case, the list of his works would be a very different thing without these Werke ohne opuszahl (WoO); it would, in fact, be less than half as long. The summary by Georg Kinsky and Hans Halm includes 138 works with opus number and no fewer than 205 without. The latter category is a real garden of delights, and there is no reason at all to regard it with suspicion. We must, after all, remember that Beethoven's most popular piano piece, the album leaf Für Elise, is included in this group (WoO 59). There are various reasons why a composer like Beethoven might decide to let one of his musical offspring lead a life without an opus number. He might find a work too unimportant to give it an official place among symphonies, string quartets, and other large-scale compositions. And sometimes there was no reason to include it in the cataloging process: Beethoven, for example, wrote several pieces of chamber music for members of his circle of friends which were never intended for performance outside this private world. .... Biography

Marjanne Kweksilber began her vocal studies with Herman Schey at the Amsterdam Muzieklyceum, passing her final examinations under the supervision of Max van Egmond. Additional studies followed under Herman Woltmann and Daniel Ferro. Her repertoire, from the beginning, was a varied one, ranging from the Baroque through the Viennese Classics as well as contemporary music. Vera Beths studied with Herman Krebbers at the conservatory of the Amsterdam Muzieklyceum. She won the 1969 Oskar Back competition and was awarded the Prix d'Excellence in the same year. She then concluded her studies with Ivan Galamian in New York, spending her summers in the United States participating in Rudolf Serkin's famous Marlboro Festival.

Gijs Beths, like his sister Vera some years later, received his first violin lessons from his father at the age of five. He completed his studies as the Staatliche Musikhochschule of Cologne, under Professor André Gertler, and followed interpretation courses with Nathan Milstein. As concertmaster of the Rheinische Kammerorchester and first violin of the Kölner Streichquartett, he has given many concerts both at home and abroad. After several years as a violinist in the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, he was appointed concertmaster of the orchestra of the Netherlands Opera. He was subsequently appointed first concertmaster of the Northern Holland Philharmonic Orchestra, a position which he presently occupies. Gijs Beths is in constant demand as a chamber musician and soloist.

Anner Bijlsma was born at The Hague in 1934 and received his first music lessons from his father. He later studied at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague with Carel van Leeuwen Boomkamp. He concluded his studies in 1957, at which time he was awarded the Prix d'Excellence. Anner Bijlsma gained international fame in 1959, when he won the first prize at the Casals Competition in Mexico. He was principal cellist of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra from 1962 to 1968. Anner Bijlsma teaches at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague, and at the Amsterdam Sweelinck Conservatory. In 1982, he was Erasmus Lecturer at Harvard University. Anner Bijlsma has made a number of recordings; the best known are his performances of the Bach solo cello suites, which have become a byword for many of his colleague cellists. Anner Bijlsma is a member of several chamber ensembles including a trio with Frans Brüggen and Gustav Leonhardt, the Rondom Quartet, and a duo with fortepianist Malcolm Bilson.

Stanley Hoogland studied piano and musical theory at the Amsterdam Muzieklyceum under Jaap Spaanderman. He pursued additional studies in London with Maria Curcio , and in Bloomington, Indiana (USA) with Menachem Pressler. Stanley Hoogland appears regularly as a soloist and chamber player in Europe and America. He has concentrated on the fortepiano, which has led to a number of recordings (on Harlekijn and Philips), including a recording of 3 unknown sonatas by Dussek, played on a 1792 Broadwood, an instrument from Stanley Hoogland's own collection. Stanley Hoogland teaches at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague, with additional specialisation in fortepiano.
